Prayer

Here is a collection of prayers that I have found over the years. I find myself continually looking up these prayers at various times and during various trials of life. As a result, they are being stored here, so they can be found easily in the future.

Fr. Athanasius.

Prayers of the Saints

St. Niphon

A prayer concerning people who ridicule him.

Lord, have mercy on all who ridicule me or hate me. You know the evil one incites them to do this, just as he makes me continually embitter Your Divine Name. For this reason I beg you, Almighty God and Lord of mercy, to forgive and bless those who scorn me. Cause them to emerge as spiritual stars, great saints. Grant them goodness and gentleness. Give them peace, enlighten them and enable them to enjoy Your eternal glory, O Lover of mankind.

A prayer against vain glory

O God, have mercy on me who has fallen and turn not away from me, the destitute and good for nothing, but forgive e, most merciful that You are. Good God and Lover of man, You know the human disease and suffering. Heal me, O Lord. With your strength I shall become more watchful, so that I may be able to escape from my secret passions and be save from the enemies of my soul.

Prayer to the Theotokos

Most Holy Theotokos Virgin, Mother of mercy and compassion, take pity on me and have mercy on me, the sinner.

St. Arsenios

God do not leave me, I have done nothing good in your sight. Rather according to your goodness, let me now at least make a beginning of doing good.

Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow

Lord, I do not know what to beg of Thee; Thou alone knowest what is needed for me. Thou lovest me more than I know how to love Thee. O Father, give to They slave that for which I do not even know how to beg. I do not dare to ask for either a cross or consolation; I am only standing before Thee with my heart open to Thee. Thou seest my needs which I do not even know; see and deal with me according to Thy mercy. Purge and heal me, humble me and raise me; I am in awe before Thee and I am silent before Thy will and Thine unfathomable ways for me. I am bringing myself as a sacrifice to Thee; teach me to pray. Pray Thyself within me. Amen.

Sophrony

Come, O Lord and perform Thy will in me. Thy commandments find no place in my cramped heart, and my poor mind cannot discern their content. For if Thou wilt not come and abide in me, I perish. I know that thou dost not coerce but I pray Thee, in power enter into my house and give me new life. Transform my benighted pride into Thy humble love. By Thy light transfigure my all perverted nature, that not a single passion posses me to prevent the coming of Thy Father and Thee, to make me a holy abode for the life which Thou Thyself has vouchsafed me to behold. Yeah O Lord, I beseech Thee, perform in me this token of Thy kindness.

St. Silouan the Athonite

I ask you to try something. If someone grieves you, or dishonors you, or takes something of yours, then pray like this: “Lord, we are all your creatures. Pity your servants, and turn them to repentance,” and then you will perceptibly bear grace in your soul. Induce your heart to love your enemies, and the Lord, seeing your good will, shall help you in all things, and will Himself show you experience. But whoever thinks evil of his enemies does not have love for God and has not known God.

The Psalms

O God be merciful unto us and bless us and make Thy face to shine upon us, and make Thy way to be known on earth, and Thy salvation among the nations. Ps 67:1-2

St. Patrick
